An Alliance Between Healthcare and Fitness

By Oscar

A new alliance between healthcare services and the fitness industry, the Recovery & Beyond program was created by HealthSouth, an outpatient service center, and FitLinxx, an electronic wellness resource. Recovery & Beyond seeks to improve quality of life for patients, and tocontain healthcare costs by helping patients comply with their healthcare providers’ recommendations.

“[Physical therapy patients] say,’this has allowed me to start a conditioning program as well. I’d like to continue this, but I need the motivation,’” says Darrell Becker, administrator and physical therapist at HealthSouth Virginia Beach.

Program members are referred to a fitness facility that uses the FitLinxx systemfrom one of the five area HealthSouth facilities after they complete physical therapy. Patients are sent to the fitness facility with a packet containing their information, which FitQuest coaches (trainers for the program) use to create a complete exercise program using FitLinxx. They give a complete, comprehensive orientation, and then get the individuals going on theequipment recommended by the referring physician.

Once the program is set up, exercisers log into the system using a pin number, and are told which piece of equipment to use. The computer attached to that piece ofequipment instructs the exerciser on the seat setting, weight, number of repetitions, how high or low to lift, how fast to go, how to move from concentric to eccentric contractions, and whether the person is overexerting or underexerting. Then, the machine tells members how to exit the machine, and what their next piece of equipment is. “They get instant feedback,” says Becker.

Coaches send program participants messages through the FitLinxx system, and meet with them on a regular basis; members can also access their program information through the Internet. “Before Recovery & Beyond,… once your insurance ran out, you were done; you got your piece of paper and were sent home to do your stretches and exercises. But when you join Recovery & Beyond, you get to continue the program for a minimal fee…. People get to meet with people who are their own age, and build a rapport with other members,” says D.J. Paet, health and wellness director at Mt. Trashmore. Says Becker, “In the past, people would be discharged and you weren’t always sure they were going to comply with their program. Now, with Recovery & Beyond, there’s a chance to enhance and continue their program…. It closes the loop.”

The first two weeks of the programare free; then, program members have the option to jointhe club with their initiation fee waived. The Recovery & Beyond program will be expanded to more than 150 markets.
